<dc.description>A novel designer, maker, studio, retail craft market set in a grand
old Victorian cast iron and glass building in the Manchester
Northern Quarter, fully restored to its former glory. Unique
combinations of workshops where you can see artefacts being made,
and retail studio showrooms where you can browse and buy the
merchandise.

It is rather hidden away amongst new residential developments just
off Tib Street at the Swan Street end, in the so-called "Northern
Quarter" of the city centre, just 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly
Gardens. Good nearby street car parking. Jointly run and promoted
by the North West Arts Board, Arts About Manchester, Greater
Manchester Visitor Centre, North West Tourist Board and Manchester
City Council.

It has very much of a feel of the old "guilds" of artisans, and the
atmosphere is both relaxed and invigorating. Two storeys of arcaded
workshops with an excellent vegetarian café/restaurant
(formerly "The Olive Branch", recently resurrected as "Dr Livvy's
Café") on site, where you may take a light meal to the
accompaniment of live piano music.

The two floors of designers, contemporary craft workers and artists
who trade here deal in a wide range of media, including : ceramics,
textiles, jewellery, sculpture, screen printing, carved wooden
artefacts, glassware, furniture and designer clothing and
accessories. Most of the craft workers exhibit at trades fairs, and
there is a regularly changing programme of exhibitions and
displays.</dc.description>

<dc.description>The Manchester Centre for Regional History was formally set up in
1998 with the aim of building upon established strengths within
Manchester Metropolitan University in the history of Manchester and
the north west of England. It is an umbrella for a number of
scholars within the Department of History and Economic History
whose work has a distinctively local or regional emphasis.

The Centre is strongly rooted in the history of its region, but is
also concerned with broader historical questions which explore the
significance of regions, regional identity and the relationship
between regions and the nation state. It encourages comparative
research on local and regional issues and has a particular
commitment to community history.

The Centre organises events which bring together scholars working
in related fields of regional history and encourages collaborative,
multi-disciplinary projects with a broad range of institutions,
groups and individuals who are interested in innovative research
into localities, communities and regions. It is especially keen to
encourage activities which bridge the gap between academic history
and the wider public outside academic life, particularly through
furthering its links with schools, colleges, local history
organisations, museums, archives and libraries.

The Centre produces The Manchester Region History Review and is
also responsible for the MA in the History of the Manchester
Region, which has been running successfully for several years. The
Centre’s aims are:

* To consolidate and expand existing expertise in the history of
the Manchester region by promoting historical research on the north
west of England

* To become a resource base and national centre of excellence for
historians working on regions and localities

* To encourage multi-disciplinary research and to develop and
promote comparative regional history at national and international
levels

* To encourage research which is popularly accessible

* To develop research initiatives which meet the needs of
communities in the north west of England</dc.description>

<dc.description>Manchester Cathedral now has a stunning Visitor Centre in which we
aim to make your visit a really enjoyable experience. The hi-tech,
interactive displays in our Exhibition area are a magnet for young
and old alike.

Perhaps the greatest feature is the historic Hanging Bridge, a 15th
Century bridge which connected the Mediaeval Town with the Church.
Built in 1421 the bridge has been excavated and can now be viewed,
indeed touched in all its splendour in our basement restaurant. The
site of the Hanging Bridge was built over the Hanging ditch, a
natural ditch which connected the rivers Irk and Irwell. The bridge
is mentioned in many mediaeval documents and was a prominent
feature of mediaeval Manchester.</dc.description>

<dc.description>Home of Europe's largest public collection of Tiffany Glass, the
Haworth Art Gallery was originally called 'Hollins Hill'. It is a
Tudor-style Edwardian house designed and built by Walter Brierley,
FSA of York, for brother and sister, William and Anne Haworth. It
is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement and includes an
oak pannelled entrance hall, hand crafted decoration and heraldic
stained glass windows. The gallery stands in nine acres of
parkland.</dc.description>

<dc.description>Imagine stepping back in time to a Victorian Manchester, not the
city of commerce and corporate splendour but a hidden city of gas
lamps and narrow alleys, of slums and unruly alehouses.

Now imagine a busy police station in the heart of the city from
where police officers arrested criminals and upheld the law.

Housed in this once busy Victorian police station, the museum was
opened in 1981. It has featured in numerous tv and radio programmes
and is popular with researchers and group visits. Open every
Tuesday, the museum is accessible other weekdays by appointment.
The building has access ramps, a lift to all floors and toilets on
each floor. There is also a small retail/ information point.</dc.description>

<dc.description>The official Museum of GMC Fire Service is situated at Rochdale
Fire Station, in the north- east of the county, and opened in 1983.
The many and varied exhibits include several full- size fire
appliances, along with equipment, uniforms, models, photographs,
medals and insignia, which together portray the history of fire
fighting in general, but particularly within Greater Manchester.
The Greater Manchester area has played a significant role in the
history and development of fire engines and fire fighting, which
the GMFS Museum portrays through its collection. The county had the
first municipal fire authority in England (Manchester), the first
motor fire engine purchased by a British brigade (Eccles), and has
played a major part in fire engine manufacture over the past 150
years.</dc.description>

<dc.description>Launched in November 1998, CUBE is committed to the investigation,
discussion and advancement of design quality within the built
environment. From the outset, CUBE has focused on the importance of
creative activity within urban design disciplines. We feel that
this emphasis has positioned us as a centre with a well-defined
identity - one that reflects, embraces and projects the Northwest's
increasing confidence in how it articulates itself through its
built environment. The centre is aligned with the issues raised in
the Government's urban white paper and is cited as an integral
player in the delivery of high quality urban design. That its
objectives align so well with the emergent issues of the day is
testament to the strength of its ideas and the direction of the
centre, at the heart of which are three core themes: Culture,
Community and Construction.</dc.description>

<dc.description>Cornerhouse is one of the UK's leading centres for film and visual
arts. Since opening in 1985 it has achieved an international
reputation for artistic excellence and innovation.

The galleries bring the best in contemporary visual arts to the
city, exhibiting work of international significance, initiating and
receiving touring exhibitions while also identifying opportunities
to support and promote artists from the North West. The programme
provides a launch pad for young artists as well as exhibiting
established British and foreign artists through a balance of solo
and themed exhibitions, retrospectives and the commissioning of new
work. Collaborations with other galleries, resulting in national
and international tours of Cornerhouse initiated exhibitions, also
serve to enhance Cornerhouse's worldwide reputation</dc.description>

in which to celebrate and profile new work.

Visitors can sit back and sample a unique selection of teas in a

<dc.description>Blank Media has been formed to promote creativity and the practices
of all individuals. We aim to give the opportunity to creative
people who may not usually get the chance to show work and enable
these people to have a future within the arts. This includes young
people and graduates, creating a platform for them to build their
practices and enable them to evolve.

We welcome any new members, whether local, national and
international practitioners, enabling these people to have equal
opportunities, as to those that are already members of Blank
Media.

Blank Media looks to reach out to new audiences, including those
that do not usually attend arts exhibitions and events. We also aim
to create innovative events, which will challenge the audience's
perceptions of the arts and creativity.

We look to create collaborations and links to a range of different
groups within the community, including leading workshops, as well
as to invite people from within these groups to become members of
Blank Media and submit work and ideas for exhibitions and

<dc.description>On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies
the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the
village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the
foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures
within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the
other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the
uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding
engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the
intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving
headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building
status.

The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery
site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an
important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the
museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many
miles, a fitting memorial to days now past. Apart from the steam
winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not
least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the
largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom. The colliery
began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south
Lancashire Coalfield. Had it not been for the increasing demand for
coal, at that time, the project would not have been viable. The
coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet
of wet and unstable ground. These factors made the sinking of the
shaft a very expensive proposition. The novelty of many of the
requirements tested the ingenuity of the engineers during the
construction, so much so that a paper, on the sinking of the shaft,
was presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers. The colliery
had a lifespan of only 62 years, finally closing its gates in 1970.
Because of its short and relatively recent history, a considerable
number of written and photographic records have survived. This has
enabled a detailed study to be made of the construction of the
colliery and its subsequent operation. The museum is now run and
maintained, on behalf of the community, by the Red Rose Steam
Society Limited, a registered charity based in
Lancashire.</dc.description>

Greater Manchester is an exciting and vibrant cultural centre,

engagement with the arts for local residents, visitors and

Audiences are the life blood of the arts, but in an increasingly
crowded leisure market place, arts organisations need to work
together to ensure that these audiences continue to grow, keeping
on top of marketing trends, opportunities and

<dc.description>The Manchester City Experience (Museum & Stadium Tour) combines
the rich sporting history of Manchester City Football Club with a
60 minute tour of the awe-inspiring City of Manchester Stadium. In
addition until 5th May 2006 the Experience is staging its Barnes:
Father & Son exhibition highlighting the careers of Fifties
hero Ken Barnes and his son Seventies star Peter. Both players won
major trophies while with the Club, making them one of the most
successful father-son combinations in football history.

The Manchester City Experience was recognised for its fantastic
contribution to tourism in Manchester with two victories at the
Manchester Tourism Awards 2005 and a North-West Regional Award
2006. These successes came in the Small Visitor Attraction of the
Year category when the Club’s outstanding museum & tour
The Manchester City Experience was recognised for its superb role
as a major Manchester attraction.

The category recognises the achievements of attractions with
visitor numbers of less than 100,000. This is the third major
accolade for the museum since its official opening in April 2004.
During 2004 the Experience was shortlisted for an Award For
Excellence at the Museums & Heritage Awards - the only sporting
attraction ever to be shortlisted – and it was Highly
Commended at the 2004 Manchester Tourism Awards.

Speaking of the success presenter Vernon Kay stated: "The judges
described this as an outstanding entry and were impressed with the
clear appeal that the attraction has for both football and
non-football lovers. They also particularly commended the
attraction's commitment to the wider community as well as visitors.
Our mystery shoppers thought the tour excellent and were impressed
with the staff's friendliness and professionalism in all areas of
the attraction."

City’s second award came in the Business Tourism Award, when
the City Of Manchester Stadium’s facilities for larger groups
were highlighted: “Our judges described the City of
Manchester Stadium as crackingly good. They loved the bespoke
service and willingness to meet individual needs and were really
impressed with efforts put into this entry.”

The Manchester City Experience (Museum & Stadium Tour) combines
the rich sporting history of Manchester City Football Club with a
hour long tour of the awe-inspiring City of Manchester Stadium. In
2004 the Experience was also shortlisted for an Award For
Excellence at the Museums & Heritage Awards - the only sporting
attraction ever to be shortlisted.

What they said about the Experience:

“The City museum is a fun experience. History and
entertainment are sometimes strange bedfellows but museum manager
Gary James and his enthusiastic team have managed to mix the two
together seamlessly. Best of all, it’s as cheap as chips to
sample the vast array of delights on tap in the museum which comes
as part of the £8.75 package for the grand tour of the City of
Manchester Stadium. Take my word for it… This is the best
show in town.” Manchester Evening News.

“The museum at the City of Manchester Stadium is a
delight… It avoids the dull dreariness of past sporting
exhibitions. It also eschews the temptation to be a modern glitzy
extension of the club shop. The Manchester City Experience has a
charming diffidence. It takes a wry sociological look at what it
means to be a supporter of the Blues.”

“I was impressed by the scholarship and extensive research
that underlies the exhibition. In one league at least Manchester
City is ahead of its rivals.” The Museums Journal

"From its foundation right through to the present day, the Club has
been embraced by Mancunians of all backgrounds, and in the same
way, the Club has striven to represent the immense diversity of
this great city." Outnorthwest

“Life changing experiences do not always follow visits to a
tourist attraction, but my look round the Manchester City
Experience led to a sudden, poignant decision. At last, I have
discovered the place where I want my ashes to be placed after my
death.” Stockport Messenger</dc.description>

<dc.description>The Manchester Museum’s origins lie in the collection of the
Manchester manufacturer and collector John Leigh Philips
(1761-1814). After his death, a small group of men bought his
'cabinet', and set up the Manchester Natural History Society in
1821. As its collections grew from around the world, the
collections were transferred to their present location in the Owens
College in 1868, (now the University of Manchester). The buildings
which now house the Egyptology and Ethnographic collections were
designed specially by Alfred Waterhouse and opened to the public in
1890.
